How Long Does Pre Workout Last Before It Expires and gets all Clumpy?
Pre-workouts normally last about 5-6 months once you have opened the container and this is a general rule to go by. There are however other factors as well, for example the brand, the ingredients and also where you store the container all factor into this. Pre-workout supplements typically have a high sign or its somewhere printed on the container with its expiration date and you should always keep a track of this. This date on here, indicates the time frame that the manufacture guarantees this pre workouts quality and effectiveness.
Finn’s Pre-workouts: Favorite pre-workout supplement and proper storage
My current favorite pre workout is Jacked Factory NITROSURGE! I really love the flavor of this pre workout! It is pleasant and not overly sweet or artificial tasting like some of the others. The berry lemonade just gives me tons of energy, no jitters and i can get into my cardio session with no problem. Comparing this pre-workout with other brands I’ve tried before, I’m pleased with the effectiveness and affordability. There are a plethora of flavors to choose from, and for the most part they all taste like juice…but laced with that tingling sensation and I love it.
With one scoop, the drive to workout is desired, and I dare not even try the two scoop dose fearing that I’ll go bananas though it’s nice to know I have that option for intended intense workouts. I’ve also had no issues of it causing any stomach problems though I normally drink it after a small meal.

What Is the Typical Shelf Life of Pre-Workout Powder? Pre Workout expire general rule and more
If you do not open the container for a Pre-workout powder, this typically can last between one or two years. However, and keep this in mind friends, once the tub of pre-workout is opened, the timer starts. The Shelf life starts to decrease due to exposure to air, moisture and all the things its opened to.
Can Pre Workout Go Bad If It’s Unopened?
Absolutely YES it can, even an unopened pre-workout can go bad after awhile. Yes, it might take a bit longer than a pre-workout that has been opened, but the ingredients will degrade over time especially if not stored properly. I always tell my friends, and keep myself honest with printed expiration dates and staying on top of them. I know i sound like a broken record friends, but this is very important for your workout routines to stay amazing and your health to stay even better. SO – once again, always check the expiration date on your pre-workout before you use it, even if the tub is still sealed.
How to Determine the Expiration Date on Your Pre-Workout?
Most if not all reputable brands of Pre-workout will have a clear expiration date printed on the label or somewhere on the container. It may also say “EXP” which stands for expiration, and it will be followed by the date, or something like “Best by” or “use BY” this date. Again please take this seriously and keep an eye out for those expiry dates. Why you ask? Because no one likes a clumpy pre workout that is suppose to give you a boost of energy but instead you get a stomach ache or worse. If for some reason you cannot find the expiration date anywhere, before you consume the pre workout – I very much suggest you contact the manufacture first to confirm the shelf life of your pre-workout supplement.
Does Pre Workout Expire? Yes it does, as we get into more of the article, I will explain more.
Is It Safe to Use Expired Pre-Workout?
I do not recommend taking any expired pre-workout supplements ever! While, yes – they “may” still be safe to consume, there is too much risk here. One – their effectiveness may have decreased. Two – The ingredients like caffeine and creatine might lose their potency over time, which will for sure result in a less then powerful pre-workout experience. and finally lastly – it can be dangerous to your health. I always say ( from now on), take a scoop of a pre-workout for the best workout, not to give yourself health problems.
What Happens If You Use Expired Pre-Workout Supplement?
If for some reason, you do drink expired pre-workout, most likely you will see zero energy boosts or any performance benefits that you are probably hoping to see. And in worse case scenarios, Consuming expired pre-workout can and most likely will lead to unpleasant side effects like an upset stomach, diarrhea and more. I don’t know about you friends, but I am not trying to deal with an upset stomach or diarrhea when I am at the gym trying to get my workout in. The more you know right!
What Are the Risks of Consuming Expired Pre-Workout?
Like anything in life, if you mess around – you will find out eventually. The same goes for pre-workouts, there are risks for consuming expired products. The risks vary depending on the specific ingredient in that pre workout. Here are some potential Risks that I’ve seen or heard from friends who have taken expired Pre Workouts:
- Reduced Effectiveness: The common one I hear, your expired pre workout no longer provides you anything, no energy boost or enhancement to your performance.
- Upset Stomach: A few friends complained about an upset stomach, but after they took a day or two off – this did go away for them. I believe because the ingredients in your pre-workout, especially amino acids, break down and start to cause digestive discomfort.
- Moldy: I’ve also once, because the pre-workout was exposed to so much air and moisture, it started to develop mold! Which friends, is very harmful to consume.
So the lesson of the day, moldy pre workout is very bad! Pay attention to those Pre-Workout Expire dates. also – Does Pre Workout Expire? YES it does. I hope you see the dangers it brings to not knowing the answer to this question.
Can Expired Pre-Workout Powder Cause Upset Stomach?
Very much so, like I have mentioned before, any food including expired pre-workout powder can and will most likely cause upset stomach. Keep this motto in mind, If it’s gone bad, It’s going to hurt your tummy. Why? This is due to the breakdown of these ingredients, for example amino caids, which do irriate the digestive system. I must give a warning here and a read this friends. ” IF you experience ANY DISCOMFORT after using a pre-workout, stop consuming it right away and contact your healthcare professional.” Always better to be safe, then sorry.
What Are the Signs That Pre-Workout May Have Gone Bad?
I will share a few signs that I’ve personally seen, to help you understand if your pre-workout may have gone bad:
- Big ol Clumps: If you see or notice your pre-workout powder is clumpy...throw that sucker away. This is a clear indication that the product has been exposed to moisture and should be discarded right away. Don’t even look at me, just go now and throw it out.
- Discoloration: When the color starts to change, this also signifies that the pre-workout is no longer fresh and like before…throw that sucker away.
- Weird and foul odor: A stranger, and off putting smell starts to burn your nostrils, you guessed it…this is yet another sign that you pre-workout has gone bad. Throw that sucker away ASAP.
- The Taste starts to change: If your pre-workout starts to taste differently then what you usually have, this MAY be another sign. its always best to err on the side of caution, and throw that sucker out as well.
How to Properly Store Pre-Workout to Prevent It from Going Bad?
Here we are! In my opinion, the most overlooked part of a Pre-workout – the storage. Proper storage is essential for not only maintaining the quality of the product, but also the shelf life of your Pre-workout. I will share some tips for you guys to follow:
- Always store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and humidity will accelerate how bad your powder gets, and degradation of the ingredients.
- Double check the container seal, always have it tightly sealed. Exposure to air will in turn introduce moisture to your pre-workout, and compromise the potency of it.
- DO NOT store in the refrigerator: Unless specifically told by the manufacturer, do not store your pre workouts in the refrigerator. Why? well, the temperature fluctuations can and most always do lead to condensation and clumping of the pre workout.
Can Pre-Workout Go Bad After Mixing?
Yes it can, a mixed pre workout has a much shorter life shelf then let’s say an UNOPENDED powder. Once you mix the powder with water, the ingredients start to break down, the timer starts and the effectiveness diminishes.
Does Mixed Pre-Workout Have a Shorter Shelf Life?
YES, a mixed pre workout typically lasts a few hours at best before it starts to lose its potency and becomes not good for you to consume. I always recommend to all my friends, to consume the pre workout within 30 minutes to an hour of mixing for the best results.
How Long Can You Keep Mixed Pre-Workout Before It Expires?
While i do not suggest this, there really is no hard or fast rule here. Most experts recommend taking the mixed pre workout within 12 hours of preparation. Beyond that, the effectiveness of the ingredients significantly do decrease.
Conclusion: Keep your pre-workout good
There you have it friends, I hope you have learned a few things today on this journey with me. I have gone over how to tell and prevent pre-workout from going bad to reading past expiration dates and more.
